"The Agile Change Conductor"

Malaz A. Boustani, MD, MPH, is a nationally recognized geriatrician and agile physician-scientist whose work focuses on transforming brain health and aging care through the science of innovation and implementation. He is the Richard M. Fairbanks Endowed Professor of Aging Research and the Founding Director of the Center for Health Innovation & Implementation Science at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Boustani developed, evaluated, and scaled the collaborative dementia care model, known as the Indiana University Aging Brain Care Program, within a safety-net healthcare system serving socially vulnerable populations. The alternative payment model he devised to support national dissemination was adopted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in 2023 as the GUIDE program. Drawing on principles of Agile Science, Boustani created the Indiana University Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Implementation Science, a one-year program designed to train and mentor a tightly connected network of embedded change agents who apply agile innovation, implementation, and diffusion methods to transform healthcare delivery organizations into learning, adaptive systems capable of rapid improvement and scale.  Today, Boustani leads national efforts at the intersection of research, clinical care, policy, and systems transformation to improve brain health and aging care at scale.
