Qian-Li Xue, PhD

Bio

Qian-Li Xue is professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology, with joint appointments in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. A biostatistician by training, he co-founded the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health Biostatistics Group, which has played a key role in the establishment and renewal of both the Johns Hopkins Older Americans Independence Center and the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center for Minority Aging Research. 

As an independent investigator and collaborative scientist, Xue has made significant contributions to the development, validation, and clinical translation of aging phenotypes, particularly frailty and physical resilience. His work has advanced understanding of the heterogeneity of frailty, including its diverse etiologies, trajectories, and health consequences, and has informed ongoing efforts to integrate frailty assessment into clinical care, including the Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly and age-friendly surgical care initiatives. 

Xue has been recognized for his contributions through honors including the Nathan Shock Scholar Award and election as a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. He currently serves as Deputy Editor of the Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences. Xue is also deeply committed to training the next generation of researchers and has mentored Master's and doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty in epidemiology, biostatistics, geriatrics, and gerontology.
